Are there professional standards for the coaching industry?

Yes, the International Coach Federation (ICF), of which I am a member, requires all coaches to adhere to a code of ethics, core competencies and accreditation processes. To learn more about this, click here: http://coachingfederation.org/

What’s the difference between coaching, mentoring, consulting and therapy?

Coaching is not the same as mentoring, consulting and therapy. Each of these have proven and important benefits, but their purpose is different and they use different methodologies.

Mentorship is when a colleague, teacher or supervisor shares their knowledge, skills and experience to help someone progress and grow.

Consultants provide subject matter expertise beyond what their client already knows. They give clients their analysis and recommendations and tell clients what to do in order to solve a specific business issue.

Therapists help people deal with mental health difficulties and provide assessment and diagnosis. Thereapy often involves reflecting on your past so you can move beyond painful or traumatic experiences that are hindering your wellbeing.

Coaching is a pragmatic process that focuses on helping you uncover your natural strengths and gain insights on what makes you thrive. It helps you make decisions and take actions that allow you to achieve specific goals. The Coach holds you accountable so you increase commitment and motivation. Coaching is always forward-looking, highlighting where you want things to be in the future, regardless of what has occured in the past.

It is possible that a coaching client could also be working with a mentor, consultant or therapist at the same time.
